Job Announcement: Coordinator of Second Language Writing & Assessment

Position Summary
The University of Tulsa seeks qualified applicants for the approved position of Coordinator of Second Language Writing and Assessment housed in the Henry Kendall College of Arts and Sciences. Successful applicants will have completed advanced coursework in Applied Linguistics, Rhetoric/Composition, Education, or a closely-related field. In addition to Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) experience, applicants should have a strong background in educational assessment, writing center experience, and a proven record of effective teaching. The Coordinator will report to the Assistant Dean of Academic English Programs, in consultation with the Director of the Writing Program. This is a full-time, 12-month appointment. 

Characteristic Duties
  • Trains writing center consultants in ESL writing pedagogy
  • Offers professional development workshops and consultation to the TU community on writing pedagogy and assessment
  • Assists in outreach and support services to international students on the TU campus
  • Works part-time as a tutor in TU's Writing Center assisting graduate students with thesis and dissertation writing
  • Compiles and analyzes data relevant to student academic success and presents key findings in written reports to the Department, College, and other stakeholders on campus
  • Teaches non-native English speaking sections of writing program courses and other courses in the University Writing Program as needed
Minimum Qualifications
Master's Degree in English, Linguistics, Education, or a closely-related field; significant course work in second language writing and/or composition studies; experience teaching writing and non-native English speakers at the secondary or post-secondary level; experience in language or literacy assessment; excellent oral and written communication skills; and a demonstrated understanding of the oral and written communication needs of culturally and linguistically diverse learners.

Preferred Qualifications
Master's Degree in Applied Linguistics, Rhetoric/ Composition, Education, or a closely-related field; two or more years of experience teaching second language writers at an institution of higher education; advanced studies and demonstrated knowledge of current theories and issues relevant to university writing programs and centers, such as second language writing, technical writing, writing assessment and instructional technologies; proficiency in speaking and writing in two or more languages.
