> Our division of Rhetoric, Writing, and Linguistics has a distinguished record of scholarship, teaching, and professional service, and our award-winning faculty educates and trains top master's and doctoral students in the field. The division's recently-revised M.A. and Ph.D. programs combine intensive course work with opportunities for hands-on work in our Composition program. Earlier this year our First-Year Composition Program and Writing Center was awarded the CCCC Writing Program Certificate of Excellence. Administration of the Composition program rotates among members of our comp/rhet faculty, with lecturers and graduate students providing support in assistant administrative positions. We were able to make two excellent hires in our RWL division last year and look forward to making an additional hire this year.

> UTK is a Carnegie Division I, flagship university, with the missions of research and publication, graduate and undergraduate teaching, and public service. The Department of English is one of the strongest units in its College of Arts and Sciences. Our faculty, composed of nationally and internationally-known scholars and creative writers, has won five National Endowment for the Humanities and National Endowment of the Arts fellowships over the last nine years. A multimillion-dollar department endowment allows us to provide our faculty, lecturers, and graduate students with generous support for research leaves, professional travel, visiting speakers, and conferences and workshops. This endowment was established by John C. Hodges, a former department head who published the first edition of the Hodges Harbrace Handbook in 1941.
