The University Writing Program (UWP) at Rochester Institute of Technology seeks a Writing Center specialist to serve as an Associate Director of the University Writing Program. This is a 12-month, full-time, professional staff position. Expected start date for this position is July 1, 2014; review of applications will begin February 17, 2014.

 

The University Writing Program (UWP) consists of three related units: First Year Writing, the University Writing Commons, and Writing Across the Curriculum. The mission of the UWP is to advance writing excellence throughout RIT's programs, colleges, and global locations (see www.rit.edu/writing).

 

As an Associate Director of the UWP, this individual will enhance the mission of the University Writing Program's academic support for faculty and students by developing the "Writing Commons" as a robust site for RIT student writing culture. The RIT "Writing Commons" will be an integrated, innovative space dedicated to working with students, faculty, and staff to address the challenges of learning and communicating in interdisciplinary, professional, and culturally diverse environments. 

 

This Associate Director of the University Writing Program:

  • Teaches writing consultation and FYW courses, as needed
  • Assesses the effectiveness of the Writing Commons activities
  • Manages work schedules for both Peer- and Professional Writing Consultants
  • Participates in performance evaluation of professional and peer writing consultants
  • Maintains liaison relations with other units at RIT
  • Researches, collaborates and executes new initiatives with the UWP Director and Director of FYW
  • Facilitates weekly staff meetings for professional and peer writing consultants
  • Promotes and publicizes UWP activities to the campus community
  • Monitors the technology and equipment needs of the Writing Commons

The Associate Director of the University Writing Program will have a Master's Degree, at minimum, Ph.D. preferred, in composition and rhetoric, or related field; 3+ years of leadership experience in writing center work or related academic support administration, experience teaching writing at the post-secondary level, experience working with and supporting diverse populations of students, including L2 writers. Willingness to learn or familiarity with ASL, preferred.
